The announcement of the host teams for the 2022 NFL International Series gives us a first look at what we can expect from next season’s schedule. We now know which five teams will host the games as the NFL returns to the UK and Mexico and prepares to host the first game in Munich, Germany.
NFL International Series expands to 2022 in Munich, Mexico
The NFL International Series process heading to Germany has been underway for some time now. The official process began in 2021 when nine cities in Germany were considered as potential hosts. Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf were chosen as runners-up before Munich and Frankfurt were awarded two matches each.
FC Bayern Munich’s home stadium, the Allianz Arena, has been selected as the host for the 2022 game. In December 2021, NFL teams were granted “international home marketing areas” and five teams have Germany as the one of their markets. One of these teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will have the honor of hosting the first NFL game held in Germany.
The Arizona Cardinals will host the game in Mexico
The NFL is also set to return to Mexico for the first time since 2019. Between 2016 and 2019, three NFL games were hosted in Mexico. All were played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Nine teams have secured rights in Mexico. One of those nine teams, the Cardinals, will host the 2022 game.
Previously, the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers hosted NFL International Series games in Mexico. Additionally, in 2005, the Cardinals hosted a game in Mexico which was dubbed “Fútbol Americano” from a marketing perspective.
The NFL will return to the UK for three more games in 2022
After missing 2020 due to the global pandemic, the NFL hosted two games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2021 season. However, they will return to host three games and return to Wembley Stadium in the 2022 season. It was confirmed in January that the Jacksonville Jaguars would host what has become their traditional home game at Wembley Stadium in 2022.
The NFL International Series will then see two more games played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this coming season. There were rumors in early February that the New Orleans Saints would host a game in London. These rumors were confirmed as part of the announcement on Monday, February 28. Additionally, the Green Bay Packers will host the other NFL game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2022. This will be the first time the Packers have visited London. Their appearance completes the full set of 32 teams playing a game in London.
