The first Monday Night Football game of the 2022 season will see Russell Wilson return to Seattle to face the Seahawks as the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback.
Week 1 featured a handful of games featuring a quarterback playing his old team. From Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield playing the Cleveland Browns, to Joe Flacco leading the New York Jets against the Baltimore Ravens. But perhaps the biggest game has been booked for the last game of the opening week of the 2022 season.
Russell Wilson makes his debut for the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football. They will be on the road, facing his former team the Seattle Seahawks.
Trade rumors have swirled around Wilson for the past few years, but the move actually happened after they traded him to the Broncos in exchange for quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, player defensive line Shelby Harris and several draft picks. Prior to the season opener, the Broncos and Wilson agreed to terms on a five-year, $245 million contract extension.
As for the Seahawks, they will not go with Lock as a starter to face his former team. Instead, head coach Pete Carroll announced immediately after the preseason finale that Geno Smith would be the QB1 to start the season. Smith started three games for Seattle last year when Wilson was sidelined with a broken finger and went 1-2.
